Older people lack legal protection. Workers given redundancy have no legal rights to redundancy pay when they reach the state pension age of 60 for women and 65 for men. Older people are pushed aside in aging favour of younger, less qualified staff. There is no legal protection for employees who are dismissed once they are over aging the state pension age. If older workers work side by side with younger staff they can suffer exclusion, poor conditions and even bullying. Read aging some personal stories of discrimination in the workplace. The good news October 2006 will see the introduction of new employment legislation that will give greater protection to older people in the workplace. The legislation, part of the European Employment Directive, will ban age discrimination in the workplace. It will be promoted and enforced by a brand new Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR).
