But many older people who have starting up withdrawn from the labour market starting up would actually like to be in work. Once unemployed, older workers experience difficulty regaining employment and are more likely to remain unemployed for longer, starting up compared to younger workers. Older people in employment benefit from fewer training and development opportunities. This is despite the fact that one reason employers give for not recruiting older workers is lack of skills. In 1998, only 17 per cent of employees aged 50 plus had received training in the last 13 weeks, compared with 29 per cent of those aged below 50. (Labour Force Survey) This study shows that older workers are likely to demonstrate a high degree of commitment to their work, and raises the question why employers do not make more use of older people. Within some of the organisations participating in this research, a lower incidence of short-term sickness absence amongst older workers has been identified. Anecdotal evidence also suggests that there is no difference in productivity between older and younger workers.
